Star trek discovery season 4 ep 811/20/2023 So, when United Earth General Ndoye volunteers to take her place – making amends for aiding Book and Tarka’s escape – it feels like a minor cop out. What follows is arguably the most powerful scene of the season: when Burnham coolly commands Detmer – the best pilot on board – to fly the shuttle, the glances exchanged between the doomed pilot and a tearful Owosekun convey more drama than numerous pages of dialogue. This is truly edge-of-the-seat stuff, and the stakes get even higher when – once free of the orb – the crew realise that the only way to stop Tarka is to send someone on a suicide mission to remove the rogue ship from the equation – with Book unlikely to survive. Think Star Trek: Voyager, but in the 32nd century. Trek has a long history of using long-standing tech in new ways to get crews out of a jam, and the consequences to this drastic course of action are never in doubt – after burning out the drive, the only way for the crew to get home will be a decades-long journey at warp speed. You can just about forgive the blatant deus ex machina as Book stumbles upon a cat collar with the capability to disrupt forcefields – Grudge has an established dislike of holograms, after all – and the convenient hypothesis that firing up the spore drive will allow Discovery to blast out of 10-C captivity. ![]() Meanwhile, Species 10-C have brought negotiations to an abrupt halt, and Discovery is going nowhere. Having broken free of the mysterious orb encasing Discovery, Tarka is still on his one-man mission to destroy the power source behind the DMA – with Book and Reno seemingly powerless to do anything about it. I just wished we had more validation that what they're putting out there is worth the leap of faith we need to maintain before the season's "big reveal. If that serves as a reminder of what Captain Burnham and her crew are fighting for, it doesn’t make the task ahead any easier. The performances were on point for the series but it was more of an ensemble episode with no one particular performance standing out. It doesn't feel like progress, because they have no way of testing it out until they feel like finally introducing 10-C. The Discovery episode feeds us a line and hopes for the best on pure intuition without actually testing it first. The title suggests extensive attempts at problem-solving facing the language barrier, but it's nowhere as nuanced as the Star Trek: The Next Generation fifth season's "Darmok" where outside-the-box thinking provided the breakthrough and resolution. Directed by Jeff Byrd and Jen McGowan and written by Terri Hughes Burton, "Rosetta" plants the seeds for what could be (and we're hoping to be) two redeeming final episodes if this week's episode was any sign of what's to come- but it needs to be much more than this. We see Book and Tarka attempt to function as a unit to help their own cause and it surprisingly doesn't end up a colossal disaster even with the storyline opportunities afforded them. ![]() Again, a familiar franchise theme over the years was once again put into play. There were some psychological challenges to overcome in play as well, as one of those dangers plays upon each individual's fears and how they subsequently deal with them before they're able to science their way through it. The rest of the episode consists of a mix of the away team facing uncertain threats planet-side as has become the fashion for the franchise. While Book and Tarka's next move is contingent on the away team, they devise a plan to infiltrate Discovery to see what they know and act on the elements involved. ![]() Burham pleads her case and the decision is final (given the time constraints). Culber ( Wilson Cruz) to the planet surface despite protests by the Federation delegation about the next ranking senior commanding officer (nee: Saru) to remain on the ship. Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green) assigns an away team that includes herself, Capt.
