Ewg sunscreen guide no more than spf11/21/2023 Scientists used UV-absorption testing and compared those results with computer-modeled protection and the SPF values on product labels. with SPF values from 15 to 110 to assess their broad spectrum protection against both types of UV rays. regulations ignore the relationship between the labeled SPF and measured UVA protection.ĮWG decided to test 51 sunscreens sold in the U.S. Most evaluations of sunscreen efficacy focus primarily on skin redness, or sunburn, caused by UVB rays. "Balanced protection of ultraviolet radiation is important because of the long-term health issues linked to UV exposure-especially harmful UVA rays, which are linked to immunotoxicity and skin cancers," she added.Ĭonsumers are getting burned by misleading sunscreens store shelves have products that overstate their sun protection claims based on UVB, or sunburn, reduction-without providing similar UVA protection," Burns said. "For years, EWG has warned consumers about the safety and efficacy of sunscreens. don't offer adequate protection against both UVA and UVB rays," said Carla Burns, senior director of cosmetic science at EWG and one of the new study's coauthors. "Most sunscreen products sold in the U.S. They said switching to sunscreens with higher UVA protection instead of higher SPFs might reduce skin cancer risks. The findings echo a study released by Food and Drug Administration scientists in 2019 that conceded current sunscreen standards are inadequate. "The sunscreen industry has for too long focused on advertising higher and higher SPF values and UVB rays, not on providing products with stronger UVA protection," he said. "Broad spectrum products provide protection from UVA rays that are associated with skin cancer, free radical generation and immune harm. "Even more concerning is the lack of adequate broad spectrum protection, and that's a public health problem," Andrews said. Consumers are left without protection against both UVA and UVB. Sunscreen broad spectrum protection often missingĮWG's research found that most sunscreens provided just 42 to 59 percent of the labeled SPF. That's much lower than what's required of sunscreens sold in Europe. On average, sunscreens tested in a laboratory but not on people provided a meager 24 percent of UVA protection, compared to the labeled SPF value. Most sunscreens also failed to live up to boasts of protection related to UVB rays, which are largely responsible for sunburn. The new research, published in the peer-reviewed journal Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine, used laboratory tests and computer modeling to assess UV ray absorption.ĮWG scientists found that sunscreens often fell far short of the claims of protection against UVA rays that cause aging, immune harms and greater cancer risks. "Most of the products we tested reduced UV radiation only by half of what would be expected from looking at the SPF on the label," said David Andrews, Ph.D., a senior scientist at EWG and the lead author of the study unveiled today. For the study, EWG scientists tested 51 sunscreens with SPF between 15 and 110.

Netbeans idefor students11/21/2023 The output at the bottom right is from a Resolve Project Problems operation to download missing dependency artifacts. Notice the extensive functionality in the context menu and its refactor submenu. This is NetBeans working with the code for the Neo4j graph database. NetBeans still includes a design tool for Swing GUIs, previously known as “Project Matisse.” (Does anyone still build Swing GUIs?) IDGįigure 3. It performs source code analysis and offers an extensive set of hints to quickly fix or enhance your code. NetBeans also offers a full range of refactoring tools (see Figure 3) to allow you to restructure code without breaking it. It seems to do so with fewer noticeable pauses than Eclipse and slightly more of them than IntelliJ IDEA. The language-aware NetBeans editor detects errors while you type and assists you with documentation popups and smart code completion. You can install additional Java platforms as needed, including Java Standard Edition 8 and OpenJDK up to version 18. NetBeans 13 includes Java SE JDK 14 as its default platform for code. It requires JDK 11+, and officially supports running on JDK 11 and JDK 17. NetBeans 13 can automatically add features as you need them. NetBeans has fewer plugins than Eclipse, but they are less likely to interfere with each other. The current version, Apache NetBeans 13, is precompiled for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and a portable subset runs on other systems that support Java. The NetBeans Java IDE started life as a university student project in Prague in 1996, became a commercial product in 1997, was bought by Sun in 1999, and was released to open source in 2000. Platforms: Linux, macOS, Solaris, Windows. Eclipse has more than its share of documentation issues because the ecosystem is so big. I’m afraid it’s one of the common problems with open source projects: the documentation can lag the software by months or even years. It’s not unusual to discover that the documentation includes images that don’t match the current version of the software, or that the keystrokes for your operating system are different from the ones shown in the help doc. Eclipse has extensive help and documentation, of varying age, currency, and utility.

Cdc type 2 diabetes infographic11/20/2023 The CDC-led National DPP is a public-private partnership working to build a nationwide system to deliver an affordable, evidence-based lifestyle change program to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. On Google, people can also search “prediabetes” or “type 2 diabetes” and click on the link to the DDT risk test in the Google health card that appears. A printable version of the risk test is also available in 12 additional languages to reach key populations at risk. Then they can enroll in the National DPP lifestyle change program in a few easy steps. People with a high score (5 or above) are urged to visit their doctor for a blood test to confirm their result. The campaign website also links to organizations delivering the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) lifestyle change program, proven to help reverse prediabetes and prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in those at high risk.ĭDT offers the ADA/CDC prediabetes risk test throughout its site (in English and Spanish), which enables people to quickly find out their risk of having prediabetes. The campaign reaches millions of people and encourages them to take a 1-minute test at. This campaign is the first ever to raise awareness across the nation about prediabetes. In partnership with the American Medical Association and the Ad Council, CDC leads the award-winning Do I Have Prediabetes campaign. These campaigns reach groups at higher risk of type 2 diabetes where they’re most likely to engage with and act on prevention messages. DDT continues to help close the knowledge gap with awareness campaigns in English and Spanish. Though awareness of prediabetes nearly tripled among US adults with the condition from 2005 to 2020, most of the 96 million who have prediabetes still do not know they have it. Prediabetes causes long-term health risks, but usually has no symptoms. Five-year funding was awarded to 11 recipients to assess diabetes incidence and prevalence among US children, adolescents, and young adults and provide estimates by diabetes type, age, sex, race/ethnicity, and geographic area.

Paint night ideas11/20/2023 The people are the most important part of the party. Let’s dive into some of the must-haves to get you started! Your Bachelorette and Her Bridal Party They aren’t difficult to gather but do take a little bit of time. In order to throw an epic paint party, you are going to need a few things. What You’ll Need To Throw an Epic Bachelorette Paint Party Experience To make your night truly epic, the right planning is a must, and this guide will help. Host a private party at home using online paint classes, or rent out a space and throw your art party in style. With step-by-step instructions, this party idea allows you and your friends to celebrate the bride while creating a beautiful work of art. Not only are paint parties a great twist on the traditional bachelorette party, but they also provide everyone with a beautiful souvenir and look great in photos - which is an excellent way for your bride-to-be to preserve the memory! If you give up and decide you’d rather just buy art, that’s always a good option too! I sell some of my art prints on Minted - they’re very affordable and can be framed which is super handy! In general, Minted is one of my favorite places to buy artwork. Are you looking for a unique, epic idea for a bachelorette party ? A paint party could be just the event you’re looking for. The good news is there’s no right or wrong way to DIY an abstract painting - it’s abstract! I encourage you to try things out on a test canvas to see which brushes you like best and which effects you like. Hang (not too high) in your home and admire! Coat with a protecting finish, I like matte medium and let dry.ġ2. The easiest way to do that is to paint from the back of the canvas to the front.ġ1. I finish the edges in white, but you can leave them be or finish them in any other color. When you’re all done, let the painting fully dry overnight or longer. Repeat step 7 and 8 as many times as necessary.ġ0. Go back and make additions, changes, etc. See how you’re feeling about the composition, balance, use of color, etc.Ĩ. When you feel like you’re getting close, stop, let things dry and make a coffee or tea, or heck, pour a glass of wine. Use drips and colored pencils and crayons to add texture and interest in between layers.ħ. Layer in different shades of color as you go. Start adding color in larger patches to form a rough composition.Ĥ. Typically something neutral, but also a color you won’t mind seeing if it shows through. Paint canvas a solid color in the background. Sketch a few layouts to get an idea of how you want the final composition to look. Reactivate it to view this content.ĪPRON | PALETTE | MATTE MEDIUM | SPRAY BOTTLE | ARTIST CRAYONS | ACRYLIC PAINT | PAINT BRUSHES | EASEL | COLORED PENCILS | CANVASESġ. JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. So, get your canvases ready! The painting below is different than the finished one because I didn’t actually take pictures the first time around - I wasn’t expecting it to turn out as it did, but I still wanted to walk you through my process! This easy painting tutorial walks you through how I painted my own DIY canvas and how you can do yours too! I’m covering everything from the tools you need and the techniques I use. If you’re thinking that it looks too hard, let me remind you that I have no formal training in painting! True, I was an art minor, but I never took a painting class! I walked in on day one to find that the teacher was my drawing teacher from the year before and she never took a liking to me, so I immediately dropped the class and switched into ceramics. The color schemes are different and the design/pattern/texture is also quite different, but they make me happy when I look at them and that’s all that matters I suppose! The final big one didn’t look anything like the first one, but I really love both of them and have them both hanging in the house. So, I definitely recommend starting small as it was helpful to learn how to mix colors and use my brushes. Painting art is intimidating! Especially when you have no formal training. I decided to do a smaller practice canvas first. They were colorful, bright and unique and really set the tone and mood of a room.Īfter I found the canvas and had it shipped, I have to admit that it sat in my living room, blank, for another few months. Well, it’s been many, many months since I decided I was going to paint my own piece of DIY abstract art, but finally the big one is done!Ĭanvas painting ideas bubbled into my head after eyeing so many gorgeous abstract artists’ work.

Red reflector paint11/20/2023 “Every roof has the potential to help solve the climate crisis,” said Gwen Schantz, Brooklyn Grange’s co-founder and chief creative officer. It is atop a property owned by Steiner NYC and was installed by Brooklyn Grange, an organization that designs and maintains green roofs, featuring vegetation, and rooftop farms. A new 11,500-square-foot “green roof” at 399 Sands Street in the Brooklyn Navy Yard features a mix of sedum and wildflowers, and its effect is augmented by a white cool-roof system by Siplast, a commercial manufacturer. “Rooftops present an important opportunity to both mitigate and adapt to climate change, and to address a range of environmental and social issues,” said Emily Nobel Maxwell, the cities director for the Nature Conservancy in New York.Ĭombining different roofing types with reflective coatings and solar panels can boost energy benefits. “We have projects all across the city, so I can see the impact that we are making in NYC.” “We are making an impact on the environment and on people’s individual lives,” said Zakiyah Sayyed, 36, who resides in the South Bronx and is a crew supervisor for the Hope Program. The remainder of the roof is expected to be coated in 2022 or later, depending on the availability of funds. The coated roof is expected to help cut down on the energy use for air-conditioning, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases expelled into the atmosphere. The Hunts Point Produce Market, the country’s largest wholesale produce market and a longtime mainstay in the borough, took a step toward climate action in October, coating about 30,000 square feet of its dark 800,000-square-foot roof with a material known as Elasto-Kool 1000, a white paint infused with silicone to reflect solar heat and UV rays and decrease indoor and surface temperatures during summer months. Installing cool roofs, which involves lightening the surface color of rooftops to reflect and not absorb heat, can temper excessive heat from the top down and reduce the urban heat island effect - a common and adverse consequence of climate change where air temperatures are significantly higher in a city than in surrounding areas, even at night. HR coatings are used in common laser optics applications such as folding a. Absorption and scatter during reflection lead to decreased throughput and potential laser-induced damage. Highly reflective (HR) coatings are used to minimize loss while reflecting lasers and other light sources. This sweltering effect can be attributed to the built environment, with its lack of protective tree shade and swarms of traffic and surroundings cramped with glass, asphalt, metal and concrete. This is Section 11.4 of the Laser Optics Resource Guide. In some neighborhoods, like the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx, which ranks as one of the city’s most vulnerable areas to heat, extreme temperatures actually linger, contributing to increases in heat-related illness and deaths. Last summer, New York City endured three heat waves and many days when the temperature climbed above 90 degrees. |
